Tradescantia zebrina | Wandering Dude

Silvery stripes sweep across green-to-purple leaves, while deep magenta undersides add color as the vines spill over a planter’s edge. Tradescantia zebrina is a fast-growing trailing plant that brings texture and movement to a bright interior.

Plant Characteristics

• Two silvery stripes across each leaf, with purple-toned undersides
• Trailing, branching stems that can root at their nodes
• Leaf color and vine length vary with light and natural growth

Care Details

• Light: Filtered, bright light keeps the foliage colorful. Too little light can fade the pattern and make stems leggy; strong direct sun can wash out or damage the color.
• Water: Water regularly, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Reduce watering in winter and let excess water drain.
• Soil: Moist but well-draining indoor potting mix.
• Temperature and humidity: Thrives around 65–75°F and tolerates average home humidity.
• Upkeep: Trim long or sparse stems to encourage denser growth; spring is a good time for a harder prune.
• Pet safety: Not pet-safe if chewed. Ingestion can cause mouth or stomach irritation, and contact with leaves or sap may irritate skin. Keep trailing stems away from pets.

Styling & Placement

Let the vines trail from a bright shelf or hanging planter where the silver and purple can be seen from different angles. Choose a position pets cannot reach.
