String of Hearts | Ceropegia woodii

Fine vines spill over the edge of the pot, carrying small hearts patterned in silver and green. String of Hearts (Ceropegia woodii) brings a delicate, layered look to a bright interior, whether its stems trail from a hanging planter or over the edge of a shelf.

Plant Characteristics

• Small, heart-shaped leaves marbled with silver
• Long, slender trailing stems; vine length and fullness vary naturally
• Can develop small bead-like tubers along the vines

Care Details

• Light: Bright, indirect light is a good starting point; this plant can tolerate 1–2 hours of direct sun. Avoid prolonged harsh sun, which can scorch leaves. Wide gaps between leaves can signal too little light.
• Water: Let the potting mix dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering further during winter dormancy. Overwatering can cause yellow leaves and root rot; wilted leaves may signal insufficient water.
• Soil: Use a sandy, well-draining potting mix in a container with drainage.
• Upkeep: Check trailing stems for aphids, mealybugs, and scale. The plant tolerates a snug pot, so repot only when necessary.
• Pet safety: String of Hearts (Ceropegia woodii) is generally regarded as non-toxic to cats and dogs, but eating large quantities may cause mild gastrointestinal upset.

Styling & Placement

Let its vines trail from a bright shelf or hanging planter where they can be seen without being crushed or tangled. Keep the nursery pot’s drainage working even if it sits inside a decorative container.
