Care Details

• Light: Position in bright, indirect light, protected from direct sun.
• Water: During active growth, water when the top roughly 2″ of potting mix is dry, then let excess water drain. If growth slows or the plant goes dormant in winter, reduce watering substantially; wet dormant roots can rot. Do not keep the mix constantly wet.
• Soil: Use a well-draining houseplant mix in a pot with drainage. When repotting, horticultural grit can improve drainage.
• Humidity: Alocasias prefer medium to high humidity. Dry air can brown leaf edges and favor spider mites; grouping plants or using a humidifier may help.
• Temperature: Keep warm during active growth, at least 60°F, and protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F. Take care to protect the plant from cold while transporting it.
• Feeding: During active growth, use a general liquid fertilizer according to its label. Hold off while dormant.
• Upkeep: Remove fading leaves at the base and check for spider mites. Avoid overwatering, particularly in winter. Wear gloves when cutting or handling damaged leaves, as sap may irritate skin.
• Safety: Alocasias contain irritating calcium oxalate crystals and should not be eaten. Keep away from children and pets.
