Variegated Devil’s Backbone

Variegated Devil’s Backbone has a quietly unconventional shape: green stems turn in a zigzag beneath leaves edged in cream and pale yellow, sometimes touched with pink. It brings graphic texture to a bright interior without needing a bloom to make an impression.

Plant Characteristics

• Zigzagging stems and variegated foliage
• Leaf color and pink edging vary with the individual plant and growing conditions
• Upright succulent-shrub habit

Care Details

• Light: Bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun can scorch foliage; too little light can produce leggy growth.
• Water: Water when the soil is dry 1–2 inches below the surface, then drain thoroughly. Avoid waterlogged soil, but don’t leave it dry for extended periods or leaves may drop.
• Soil: Well-draining succulent potting mix in a pot with drainage.
• Temperature: Keep warm, ideally around 60–85°F. Average to higher indoor humidity is tolerated.
• Upkeep: Watch for mealybugs and spider mites; overwatering can lead to root rot.
• Safety: Toxic to pets and people if chewed or eaten. The milky sap can irritate or blister skin, and eye exposure can cause serious injury. Wear gloves when handling cut stems, avoid touching your eyes, and keep away from children and pets.

Styling & Placement

Give its angular stems space to be seen in a bright spot out of direct sun. Keep it away from curious pets and high-traffic areas where stems could be broken.
