Plumosa Asparagus Fern

Airy in appearance yet surprisingly vigorous, the Plumosa Asparagus Fern creates a soft veil of fine green foliage across slender, arching stems. Its feathery texture brings movement and quiet dimension to shelves, hanging displays, and collected indoor spaces.

Despite its common name, this plant is not a true fern. Known botanically as Asparagus setaceus, it develops a scrambling or climbing habit as it matures and can be allowed to cascade or guided along a support.

Plant Characteristics

• Fine, feathery foliage with a light, layered appearance
• Fast-growing, arching, climbing, or trailing habit
• Evergreen indoor foliage
• Can be pruned to maintain a fuller, more compact shape

Care Details

• Care level: Moderate
• Light: Bright, indirect light or partial shade
• Water: Keep the soil lightly moist during active growth; water less frequently in winter
• Soil: Use an organic, well-draining potting mix
• Humidity: Prefers moderate to higher humidity
• Temperature: Best between approximately 55–70°F; protect from frost and cold drafts
• Pet safety: Toxic to cats and dogs, particularly if berries are ingested

Avoid intense direct sun, which can damage the delicate-looking foliage. Yellowing or foliage drop can result from insufficient light, underwatering, overwatering, or poor drainage.

Mature stems may develop small spines, and the sap can irritate sensitive skin. Wear gloves when pruning and keep the plant beyond the reach of pets and young children.

Styling & Placement

Display it on a shelf, plant stand, or elevated surface where its stems can fall freely, or train new growth along a slender support for a more vertical silhouette. Its fine texture creates a beautiful contrast beside plants with broad, substantial foliage.

It works especially well in bright living rooms, offices, kitchens, and naturally humid bathrooms, provided it receives filtered light.
