Alocasia ‘Frydek’ | Green Velvet

Deep green, velvety-looking leaves traced with pale veins give Alocasia ‘Frydek’ its graphic presence. It brings lush texture to a bright interior, with a silhouette that deserves space to be seen.

Plant Characteristics

• Arrow-shaped green leaves with prominent contrasting veins
• Upright Alocasia growth habit
• Leaf count, size, and coloring vary naturally

Care Details

• Light: Place in bright, indirect light; protect the leaves from direct sun.
• Water: During active growth, water when the top roughly 2″ of potting mix is dry, then drain thoroughly. Reduce watering substantially if growth slows or the plant goes dormant in winter. Wet dormant roots can rot; do not keep the mix constantly wet.
• Soil: Use a well-draining houseplant mix in a pot with drainage. Horticultural grit can improve drainage when repotting.
• Humidity: Alocasias prefer medium to high humidity. Dry air can brown leaf edges and favor spider mites; a humidifier or grouping plants may help.
• Temperature: Keep warm during growth, at least 60°F. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F, including during transport.
• Feeding: During active growth, use a general liquid fertilizer according to its label; hold off while dormant.
• Upkeep: Remove fading leaves at the base, check for spider mites, and avoid overwatering. Wear gloves when cutting damaged leaves because sap may irritate skin.
• Safety: Alocasias contain irritating calcium oxalate crystals and should not be eaten. Keep away from pets and children.

Styling & Placement

Give the veined leaves a bright, indirectly lit position, away from cold drafts and out of reach of pets and children.
